English name : White elderberry, Canadian elderberry

The elderberry, Sambucus canadensis L. is a subspecies of the European elderberry. It is a hardy shrub, native to eastern Canada and the United States. It is very well adapted to the climate and conditions of North America.

 
In the northern hemisphere, there are about thirty varieties of elderberry of the Sambucus canadensis species.
Unlike the tree-like European elderberry, the Canadian white elderberry is a small shrub that typically grows to a height of 1 to 4 meters.

 
The fruits and flowers of the Canadian elderberry Sambucus canadensis are edible.
After three to four years, a plant can be expected to produce between 5.5 and 6.8 kg of fruit if the planting is well managed.

 
Elderberries are appreciated for their black-purple berries. In addition to their medicinal properties, the berries are used in pies, wines, jellies, jams, juices and vinegars. They are also used as a natural food colorant.
